Status, #CryptoLife and dApps for Real Life

As announced yesterday, we will be participating in Status’s upcoming #CryptoLife hackathon, which will take place in Prague (precise location to be announced) just before Devcon4. Events like this are one of the most powerful tools we have in the decentralized tech space — there is an energy and an intensity which fuels breakthroughs that could not have happened anywhere else.

#CryptoLife starts with a pretty ambitious premise:

The Status Hackthon is named #CryptoLife for a reason. This is all about living a life with the decentralized tools and service available to us today. Injecting decentralized products (and even refusing to use some centralized ones) has already been put in place for events like EthBerlin, and we see #CryptoLife as a continuation and advancement of this movement.

Status is one of the first Ethereum projects to be ready with a working platform, with their 0.9.22 beta now on mainnet, and we can’t overstate the importance of what Status is working on. In a moment of increasing, generally surreptitious collection and monetization of user data, walled gardens constructed by proprietary platforms keep users siloed from each other — and often completely in the dark about the true nature of their services. Decentralized applications (dApps) on the other hand, seek the opposite of this: decentralized messaging means freedom of information and the ability to communicate without fear of surveillance or censorship; while decentralized finance means the freedom to store assets, trade, and transact, without arbitrary restrictions or rent-seeking gatekeepers who do not add value.

Enter Status: a combined messenger, wallet, and browser that allows smartphone users to run dApps. After many months of informal collaboration around our shared vision, OmiseGO was thrilled to enter into a formal partnership with Status to work together on integrating OMG into their open source platform. This will enable Status-based transactions to be processed on the public OMG Network, while Status users will also be able to leverage the OMG Decentralized Exchange (DEX) for transactions within their native wallet, allowing us to test out early implementations of OMG in their powerful decentralized environment. This partnership signifies a collaborative effort toward modeling a comprehensive tech stack with a user-friendly interface that is decentralized from top to bottom; our teams will be working closely together to create a seamless experience for real-world users.

We believe the only way to truly achieve mass adoption of dApps is for them to rival or even surpass the user experience currently offered by proprietary platforms. The #CryptoLife concept is a perfect jumping off point to gauge where we are, engage a network of amazing minds on some of our current challenges, and hatch some new ideas about how we can push even further.

If you fancy yourself a hacker, you can apply to hack here. See you in Prague!
